Report: Toyota FT-HS coming in 2009

The June '07 print edition of Automobile is full of juicy information, and one of the more significant bits of news appears in a sidebar on page 30. According to the magazine, Toyota has given the FT-HS hybrid sports car the green light, and the Calty-designed production version will make its debut in 2009. It's being billed by Automobile as the spiritual successor to the late, lamented Supra -- a position that's hard to argue assuming you can look past the probable lack of an inline 6. Like the concept, the two-seat FT-HS will pair the company's Hybrid Synergy Drive with an as-yet-undetermined gasoline engine (the concept utilized a 3.5-liter V6). Power and pricing aren't discussed, but if the numbers thrown around when the concept was introduced -- 400 horses and mid-level dollar amounts -- are feasible, the thing should have plenty of takers.

I love the car's interior and exterior its simply one of the most amazing shaped cars in history. I believe that Toyota's based this model on the up coming new sport cars while everyone is so uptight with the scale right now everyone forgot something...Every corperation are planning for right now only while Toyota is planning for the future that is why their standard is moving forward. This car doesn't look Ferrari like or Lotus like this looks more like Celica Supra like the older days.
By 2020 standard cars are suppose to come out 35mpg for the bucks for a new car or it wouldn't meet the standards regulation. Toyota has thought smart and began to make Hybrid cars fast and when it comes they will have at least 10 years of knowledge of saving gas while still producing 400-500hp to the wheel. Toyota is a smart corporation how many other car corporation is making hybrid sport cars at least for now not many and one is achieving a sport car that could advance to the future. Chevy Corvette, Ferrari, Porsche, and many other corporation that are making cars are not thinking of the future and when it comes Toyota will take all the fame while every sport cars will drop their horse power to save more gas or make it 35mpg.
Hummer already lost the H2 because its a mad eating gas machine on the street so far many other cars by 2020 would not meet the car line up at the lots.
Before everyone starts arguing about how ugly or beautiful the car looks everyone forgot to think of what motor it holds what Toyota was planning with it and what kind of experiment they are going to plan for the future sports ride. We people would never know what corporations are planning they only tell us so much and for that I believe that Toyota is planning to make a sports car in the future that will be the ultimate and meet the standards. We will never know the Corvette might not make the standards for having such a big gas hog. What if Ferrari never makes it to the USA no more. If Porsche couldn't make a car 35mpg there wouldn't be no Porsche in the USA no more by 2020 so count on a company that would still give you thrills and a company that once promise reliability and still promises RELIABILITY. Beautiful car for me this is the future for our kids.

I hope that the people at Toyota read these comments and don't even think twice about releasing this car. It is the best looking car to come out in a long time, especially considering the crap that Mitsubishi and Nissan are trying to pass as cars. I'm a Subaru fan myself.

Got a 2002 Subaru WRX myself, and what fantastic car that is. Always wanted a Supra tho, but this thing has blown my socks off. It is such a futuristic looking car and thats what we need. Someone to have to balls and make a concept a reality. I'm hoping it's not much more than the 60K mark in Australia though, if we even get it in Australia...
But, if this is to rival the Nissan GTR, and that is $150K, then how do we expect it to only be $50K - $70K. I'll believe it when I see it.
PS where the bloody hell can I pre order one of these babies?

Ugly or not (personally I thought it looked a little odd the first time I saw it, but it's growing quickly on me) that's a personal matter.
As for what it stands for (high performance hybrid), I think this is the more important concept.

yes! but they need to clean up some of the harsh edges...and not call it FT-HS. i'm not saying they should call it the Supra or Celica (would be nice), but i'm getting kinda of tired of alphanumerics

this is one of the best looking cars in history (i guess that is quite arguable but plenty agree so far) and this could be, quite literally, one of the finest cars ever produced (that part at least most of us agree).

That thing is one of the best looking coupe's ever.

#2...Really? I have the exact opposite reaction. I think it's hideous.
To each his own.

Hmmm... a Toyota that I actually wouldn't be ashamed of owning. I happen to absolutely love the styling - one of my favorite concepts of the past 4-5 years - and if they build it with honest-to-goodness sporting intentions, it would be tough to ignore.

They may have plenty of takers, but I won't be one of them. That thing is about as ugly as they come.

NO!NO!NO! That thing is so bad that the only thing I'd take would be a cyanide pill or pepto bismol ... to get out of there or get the shit out of my brain for buying such a monstrosity.

"honest-to-goodness sporting intentions"
Every Toyota I've ever driven has all the steering reisitance and feedback of a Pole Position arcade rig. They'll need to work on that.

Have you ever driven an MR2? It was #1 in 1985. Toyota produces some of the best sports cars. The FT-HS will be the next #1 sports car in today's market.

i'm just not sure i'f fork over $50k for it
take the hybrid option out, make it $35k with the V6 and call it the Celica
would be nice

Reminds me of an Alfa Romeo SZ and not in a good way.

I think it's hideous. But what do I know, I'm an old geezer.
Judging by the design Toyota probably out sourced this car to China.
